Our History
Report
John Whitaker and Harold Nave founded Southern Park Music School in 1964. The school began with six students enrolled at a facility near Park Road Shopping Center. Southern Park relocated to 2838 Selwyn Avenue in 1968. John Whitaker became the sole owner in 1971. Michael Lehtinen joined the faculty as a piano instructor in 1995, and became the director in 2006, upon Mr. Whitaker's retirement.
Our Philosophy
Report
Music is a language, a mode of communication. Our goal at Southern Park Music School is to help people become musically literate. Music literacy involves the ability to read and write music, and the ability to understand, perform, and create music. The language of music can communicate a range of emotions, from joy to sadness, and a range of moods, from tenderness to majesty.
Procedures
Report
During the fall and spring, Southern Park Music School operates on an 18-week term basis. Students take one lesson per week. However, if a student enters mid-term, the fee will be prorated to reflect the number of weeks remaining in the term. Summer lesson schedules may be made in cooperation with your teacher, choosing mutually convenient lesson dates.
Baritone
Report
Middle school, or about 12 years old, is usually the age a student can start to play brass instruments. Band rehearsal is not practice time. Lessons at Southern Park are designed to allow students to reach their true potential. Regular, daily practice (outside of school) on the assigned materials is necessary in order to improve.
