Sonya, a certified and experienced music teacher and performer, began to play the piano at the age of four under the enlightenment and encouragement of her mother. Sonya studied to play other musical instruments, such as the Gu-Zheng and the recorder. Furthermore, Sonya played the clarinet in marching bands, and has been playing the harp in orchestras and ensembles, and as a solo harpist.
