Violin Lessons With Kimberly
Kimberly Houglum began her violin studies at the age of six in San Diego, California. Her passion for orchestra started when she became a part of the Civic Youth Orchestra of San Diego at the age of ten. When Kimberly moved to Spokane, WA in 1998, she immediately joined the Spokane Youth Orchestra and held the position of concertmaster from 2000-2004.
Winning her first concerto competition in 2001, Kimberly performed as a soloist with the Spokane Youth Symphony. In 2003, Kimberly won the Spokane Youth Orchestra competition and Gonzaga University's concerto competition leading to two solo performances of Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen.
Pursuing her love for orchestral music, in 2008, Kimberly made her Carnegie Hall debut with the University of Michigan's Symphony Orchestra performing Mahler's Fifth Symphony and Evan Chamber's Burial Ground. Some of Kimberly's past orchestral experiences have included performances with artists such as Midori, Simon Rattle, and Itzhak Perlman.
In addition to orchestra, Kimberly loves playing chamber music. In 2007, her piano trio from the University of Michigan won second place in the MTNA Chamber Music Competition. Her chamber music studies have led her to participate in masterclasses conducted by Robert Mann, Nora Chastain, Tackas String Quartet, and Elisabeth Bloomenstock
During her studies in San Francisco, Kimberly was a member of the Magik*Magik Orchestra; an orchestra of the indie/rock genre. She recently finished recording an album with Hauschka on the Fat Cat label and went on tour throughout San Francisco and Los Angeles. She has also collaborated with Sting, the 5th Dimension, Third Eye Blind, and the Dodos.
Kimberly holds a B.M. in violin performance from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and a M.M. from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. She is currently a member of the Northwest Sinfonietta and Tacoma Symphony Orchestra and teaches privately in the Tacoma/Seattle area.
