From Our Website
Music is a language, a mode of communication. Our goal at Southern Park Music School is to help people become musically literate. Music literacy involves the ability to read and write music, and the ability to understand, perform, and create music. The language of music can communicate a range of emotions, from joy to sadness, and a range of moods, from tenderness to majesty. Music can communicate a depth of emotion beyond words. A greater understanding of music often allows a more profound experience of the beauty of music, both as a listener and a performer.
It is essential to have a piano accessible for practicing on a daily basis. An electronic keyboard does not provide the same touch as a piano and is often limited in the number of keys it contains. If an electronic keyboard is your only option, be sure it has 88 weighted keys and a damper pedal. There are many places where you can buy a used piano or you may wish to practice at a nearby church or a neighbor's home until you can buy your own piano. The NC Federation of Music Clubs is part of the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC).
We believe that a child needs to be 9 years or older to begin to fully grasp vocal technique. Voice lessons can be taught to children as young as 6 years old, but they will be taught at an age appropriate level. We recommend our Musikgarten classes (provide live link for Musikgarten page) for children under 6 years old. Exposing children to live and recorded music of many styles and the study of an instrument such as the piano should be encouraged along with formal vocal training. Music & Arts has a few locations in and around Charlotte (Arboretum, University City, and Huntersville).
You may rent mallet instruments at Music and Arts (various locations). Both Howren Music and Music & Arts keep practice pads, drum sticks, and mallets in stock for purchase. Occasionally, with the instructor's help, you may be able to locate some good instruments and/or sticks and mallets on eBay.
A reputable store will know how to measure a student to determine the appropriate sized instrument. Some stores where you may rent a viola include Music & Arts (several locations in the metro area) and Howren Music (Park Road Shopping Center). Yes, a student will need a shoulder rest, first frets, and a method book. The teacher will tell you what books to purchase.
