Founded in 1998 on the premise that taking music lessons and never playing a gig is like going to basketball practice and never playing a game. After a while, there's no point.
So we combine private lessons and band rehearsals. Students learn the skills necessary to play their instrument in their private lessons and the band rehearsals are where the students put the ir skills into practice. In addition to providing the motivation to practice between lessons, group rehearsals teach teamwork, accountability and self motivation.
5 YEARS OLD
Young rockers begin at the age of 5 with the option of participating in a group Intro to Rock class where they explore many instruments as they focus on rhythm, beats and melody; the underlying components of creating music through a combination of musical games and instrument instruction. For 5 year olds who are not yet comfortable in a group class, we offer private ukulele lessons. The ukulele is small enough and the strings are soft enough, that's it's the perfect first instrument for a young rocker. (SOOOOOO much better tha a recorder!) Finally, for those 5 year olds that aren't yet ready to leave Mom's side, we offer Mommy and Me Piano lessons, where Mommy and Child sit side-by-side as they learn to play the piano together.
6/7 YEARS OLD
For 6-7 year olds, we offer a more advanced version of Intro to Rock, called Rookies. Rookies is a weekly, one hour class that provides hands-on learning with guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and vocal instruction designed for this age group. Rookies practice ear training, come to understand song structure, learn to play rhythm patterns, play and perform in a group to experience teamwork and above all develop a love of music through inspiration and fun. Students take turns on different instruments with classic rock songs like AC/DC's TNT and Queen's We Will Rock You. Most kids this age want to play ALL the instruments; they don't want to have to select one over the other and parents certainly don't want to purchase a guitar only to find out their Rookie wants to play drums six months later...or vice versa. So Rookies is a great way for kids to experience all the instruments. And we often find each child naturally being drawn to a specific instrument over time.
7 - 18 YEARS OLD
At 7 years old and older, students begin the curriculum of a combination of a weekly private lesson and a weekly group rehearsal. The private lessons are either 30 or 45 minutes weekly and the group rehearsal is 1-2 hours a week, depending on which program they're enrolled in. Students advance from a beginner class called Rock 101 to Rock 201 to Concert Performance to Advanced Performance and with each level comes more performance opportunities. In the summer we also have additional, audition-based activities from playing festivals around the Twin Cities to going on a national tour.
Our "levels" are not based on age, but rather ability and progress from one level to the next is not time-based but rather skill based. At each level the instructor is expected to teach a set of skills to the student. When the student masters those skills, they advance to the next level. Some students zoom through while others take their time.
We have students for whom music is their #1 passion and others who use music to round out their activity schedule. Our goal is to match like-minded students with each other so everyone gets what they want out of our program.
Our teachers are our employees who have undergone national background checks, participate in safety training and are held to our national teaching standards.
We are a member of the international School of Rock network, with more than 185 schools in 13 countries.

Intro to Rock Music for 5 Year Olds
This is a 45-minute, weekly class that introduces 5 year olds to music and musical instruments. They explore stringed instruments like ukulele and acoustic guitar (both of which are easier on small fingers) as well as percussion instruments like shakers and cowbells (every rock concert needs MORE COWBELL, right?) and tom drums. We focus on rhythm, beats and melody; the underlying components of creating music.
Class is a combination of musical games and instrument instruction. To a parent, it may look more like play than education and week to week may seem mundane and repetitive. This is because this class is designed SPECIFICALLY for 5 year olds (not adults) and 5 year olds find great comfort in repetition. Repetition helps to improve speed, increases confidence, and strengthens the connections in the brain that help children learn.
Early learning experts say, The most effective way for children to learn is to engage the visual, auditory, kinesthetic and tactile pathways to the brain. This produces a multisensory connection to the concepts and skills being taught and helps children retain new information. In order to learn, children need to:
So we integrate see, hear, do, touch in every class.

This is the best place for your child to develop as a musician and performer. Love it so much!!
So far my son Xanos is loving it!! Best thing I've found for him regarding extracurricular activity! Staff are wonderful and his guitar teacher Sam ROCKS!
What an outstanding experience for kids! I love the fact that the kids can try multiple instruments before they decide which want they want to commit to. I wish this was around when I was a kid. I definitely recommend School of Rock Eden Prairie.
School of Rock has changed my kids' lives -- for the past 8 years my daughter hasn't missed a session, and keeps adding more and more. Teaches leadership, teamwork, commitment, self awareness, and of yes: music! My kids have learned vocals, guitar, bass, keys, drums, and have even dabbled in ukulele and harmonica! The instructors push when necessary, provoking the kids to find their best selves. A wonderful opportunity!
I just want to say what a great experience my son has had while being a student at SOR Eden Prairie for the past two years. His skill level as a bass player has increased exponentially and I never have to ask him to practice. He just loves to play. In addition, my son has developed skills that he will use for his entire life: Confidence in himself, self-assurance in front of a crowd, teamwork, how to be a mentor and to be mentored. These things he carries with him into the classroom and someday into conference rooms and corporate boardrooms. Not only does this confirm the approach to learning music (and life skills) that SOR offers, but it is also a testament to the quality of staff, from the management, to the instructors, and to the show directors, they are all truly exceptional. To anyone considering attending this school, I say: sign up today and provide your child with a life changing experience that will be part of their entire life!
The energy at School of Rock is fantastic! My child is excited to go to lessons and eager to practice. The selection of songs has kept him enthusiastic about learning. We like the individual plus rehearsal format for lessons. It keeps him motivated.
