Project Step We envision a world in which the classical music profession reflects the racial and ethnic diversity of our communities. Since 1982, Project STEP (String Training Education Program) has provided talented young musicians that identify with historically underrepresented groups in classical music with comprehensive music instruction.

Calling all K2 students! Applications for FOCUS I are now open! Students in Project STEP's Core program receive sustained, individualized training for up to 12 years on violin, viola, cello, or bass (with instruments provided by STEP).
Services
While many educational programs in New England offer music training for children, they do not match Project STEP's comprehensive package of high-quality long-term training, support services, and scholarships intended specifically for children from backgrounds underrepresented in classical music. Our students are able to break through socio-economic barriers to become excellent musicians, creative and confident students, and successful young adults.Spending up to 12 years in STEP, our students are challenged to achieve and maintain high levels of musicianship.
Achieving success in the classical music profession requires many things: an early start, talent, dedication and access to the right resources. Project STEP is dedicated to providing that necessary access to underrepresented students of color. Students admitted to Project STEP receive comprehensive training and guidance tailored to each individual's needs from our highly qualified teaching faculty.
The FOCUS program provides early access to musical training, exposing students to different types of music and instruments. The FOCUS program's mission is to generate enthusiasm for music, and to be a link between students and Boston-area music schools, enabling those who are interested to pursue musical study.
The Core Program at Project STEP is designed to provide students in grades 1-12 with the comprehensive classical string training needed to find success in the classical music profession. Along with music instruction, classes and enrichment opportunities, the Core Program offers ongoing informed guidance tailored to each student's individualized needs.
