Jose Antonio Abreu is the founder of Venezuela's El Sistema, a state foundation overseeing and enabling 125 youth orchestras and youth training programs. Maestro Abreu says the El Sistema is, a social program, but we use music to get there. In their essence the orchestra and the choir are much more than artistic structures. They are examples and schools of social life, because to sing and to play together means to intimately coexist toward perfection and excellence. This is why music is immensely important in the awakening of sensibility and in the forging of values.
Practice is the most essential part of learning any instrument. Without consistent focused practice there can be no musical growth. Taking music lessons without practicing is similar to going to school and not doing homework. There are many different philosophies as to how one should practice and for what length of time one should practice. Your teacher can help you figure out the correct amount of time needed as well as suggest ways to help make practice time more efficient. There is the infamous Dr. Suzuki quote that says, "You don't have to practice everyday, only on the days that you eat."
The New Jersey School of Music is extremely proud to offer private music therapy sessions with our Board Certified Music Therapists. Music Therapy sessions are available for individuals of any age with various learning and developmental disabilities or anyone in the community looking to improve overall well-being. The New Jersey School of Music is an approved service provider for the DDD of New Jersey and both Burlington County and Camden CMO/Partners for Kids and Families. Insurance reimbursement assistance may be available upon request.
Consistency in lessons and regular practice plays a major role in the growth of any musician. Therefore we highly recommend students take, at a minimum, one half-hour lesson per week. More advanced students may need extra lesson time and therefore we offer forty-five and sixty minute lessons as well. We also offer an array of ensembles and bands as a supplement to lessons. Playing in ensembles and bands helps strengthen a student's overall musicianship. Music Therapy is billed monthly with payment due on the first session of the month for the month ahead.
We love this school. My son started a couple of months ago when he was 8 with no experience. He just attended the spring recital this past weekend and I'm so proud and impressed with everything! His performance brought tears to my eyes. We found the perfect music therapist for my child! We started more than a year ago and my daughter is always excited every time she goes to NJSM. We couldn't be more happier to see her grow and discover her music talents.
