My goal is to foster students in an encouraging yet strict environment with my own knowledge and experience. People say that practice makes perfect, but a more accurate statement would be that practice makes permanent. It doesn't matter if you practice six hours a day if that practice is filled with monotony, useless repetition, and bad habits. Most students have no idea how to practice, and don't discover efficient practice techniques until college.

This is very unfortunate, considering we musicians spend many hours doing so. Teachers rarely instruct students on how to practice, but rather focus on "make this louder" or "slow down here" in their repertoire. I believe that detail work is important, but universal and general things such as how to use the hand and how to listen are infinitely more important, as they help the student in all of their learning and playing.

  • 'His class was funny!' said my 10-year-old.

Michael is the second piano teacher my son has. Before we switched teacher, my son had been going to another piano teacher for 5 years. He had been asking me when he could stop going for his piano lessons. We ended up switching to Michael.

Michael is enthusiastic about teaching young kids and develop their interest in music. He said kids should learn the pieces they enjoy. He's patient and spends time demonstrating the fingering and pedaling. On the difficult part of a piece, he literally helped measure by measure teaching my son a technique to learn on his own. He focuses a lot on articulation and adding colors to the music. It could be hard for a 10-year-old to understand. But Michael did it by demonstrating the differences. He emphasizes a lot on sight readings. The way his teaching is really building up the skill set for a young player to love and play the instrument.

Two classes after we switched to Michael, my son actually told me, "I like this class. It was fun!" Learning piano is a long and lonely process. We feel lucky to have Michael guiding my son along the way.
