We recommend that most flute students begin lessons at 7 or 8 and older. A major factor in playing the flute is determining whether a child has both the lung capacity and also the finger size to play its many keys. Unlike the saxophone and clarinet, the flute is a reed-less wind instrument that produces its sound from the flow of air across an opening. A curved head joint can allow a younger and smaller student to reach the lip plates while still maintaining a comfortable position. As the student grows in size the standard head joint can be attached at a later time.
We recommend starting banjo lessons for students eight years and older. The banjo is a four or five stringed instrument (also more rarely a six string instrument) with a circular frame and is frequently associated with country, folk, Irish traditional and bluegrass music. The banjo, along with the fiddle, is a mainstay of American old-time music. We recommend beginners start on a four string banjo.
We generally recommend starting bass guitar lessons at age seven or older. The bass guitar is similar in appearance and construction to an electric guitar, but with a longer neck length and four to six strings. Four string basses are the most common. While some recommend starting bass guitar later than a six string electric or acoustic guitar - we have found that starting on a smaller size bass guitar (1/2 or 3/4 size) it is actually easier for younger children to start on bass guitar than a six string guitar because only one string is being played at a time.
Hollywood Academy of Music and Arts offers summer music and theatre camps for students of all ages at our newly-renovated West Hollywood location. They are divided into several sessions and meet for several hours per day with short breaks in between. The dates of our summer camp schedule for 2020 will be updated in March! If you are looking for summer camp options and are located in the greater Los Angeles area, please contact us!
We recommend that students can start voice lessons as young as 5 years old. However, for voice students that are between the ages of 5-8 vocal lessons will typically be a "combination lesson" - which will involve a class that is 15 minutes of piano and 15 minutes of voice. For students in the 5-8 year old age group voice lessons will be geared towards "singing for fun" and will not involve rigorous vocal technique as children this age are usually not old enough to safely engage in intensive voice technique.
