I offer regular chances for my students to take part at concerts, recitals, and less formal occasions where they can gain self-confidence through musical expression.
I provide a no-obligation first interview/consultation at which we'll go over my policies and expectations, I'll answer any questions you may have, and I'll listen to the student sing or play. If you have a prepared song, that's great, but just a verse of something like a hymn or patriotic song will do just fine also. For voice students, we'll also define your vocal range and talk over initial singing goals.

My full name is Heather McGlaughlin Batey. I have a Bachelor's degree in Music Education from Harding University and a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Mississippi.
I've been teaching for almost 14 years in both the private studio and the public school classroom. I also hold a K-12 teaching license in both vocal and instrumental music education.
My daughter, Katie, started taking voice lessons from Heather when she was 4 years old. Katie is now a member of the ASFA music program and the Birmingham Children's Choir. Katie has won several state and regional voice competions. Heather played a large role in giving Katie the guidance and music expertise to allow her to succeed. Heather made the lessons fun, and her knowledge and passion for music shows in her exceptional teaching skills. Katie loves all aspects of music and Heather is a wonderful mentor.
Our daughter made tremendous progress in the development of her singing voice while working with Heather. We saw changes immediately as our daughter began to improve her range and technique while singing. Heather was always very positive and encouraging while working with our daughter. The lessons helped our daughter gain confidence in her singing as she looked forward to the lessons each week. Heather was willing to accommodate our request to tailor the lessons toward our daughter's specific interests. I highly recommend lessons with Heather for anyone young or not so young who has an interest in developing their vocal talents.
Heather became my daughter's voice teacher in the Fall of 2008. Although my daughter had been taking voice lessons for 1 1/2 years before that and was also involved in church and school choir programs, Heather was just what she needed. First, Heather has the heart of a teacher, which is vital for instructing young people. Additionally, she is passionate about music and helps her students to discover the joy musical expression brings to the one who sings and to those who listen! Finally, she is a great encourager to her students without compromising her standards that they must work hard to cultivate the talent God has given them.
I began taking voice lessons from Heather because I sing in a choir and I wanted to learn how to sight read music rather than learning by ear. Not only have my sight reading skills improved greatly, but so has my vocal range and confidence. Heather is very knowledgable, communicates very well and makes learning fun. I always look forward to my lessons with Heather.
Heather became my daughter's vocal instructor two months ago. We were so impressed with Heather's teaching style and passion for music from the very first lesson. She has taught our daughter so much about breathing, musical expression, and theory all ready in this short period of time. Heather is a passionate, talented person that truly cares about the development of her students.
I've been taking lessons from Heather since 2011.I began taking lessons to learn breathe and overcome my asthma issues. I was a very shallow singer with very poor breath control. Now as a friend recently advised I could peel paint off the walls with my volume. Volume is great ,but this year I'm working towards control and using my voice to convey a beautiful tone. Heather's taught me to use my voice to share my music. It's been a joy learn from her.
We are so happy with Heather Batey as our daughters vocal coach. She is amazing and the advice and instruction she provides is amazing. Our daughter loves taking lessons from her.

Spring always comes very early in the Deep South. Unless you plan well ahead and spend a ton of money on a lawn service such as TruGreen, one of the first signs of spring's arrival is a lawn full of clover, violets, chickweed, and other pesky native weeds. My less-than-perfectly-manicured lawn has huge patches of clover at the moment, so I've been indulging in something I've done since I was a child: looking for and collecting four-leaf clover. Every morning I take my two dogs out for a potty break and a morning romp.
Bel Canto is Italian for "beautiful singing." Live music at your wedding ceremony can touch the hearts of your family and friends in such a way that pre-recorded music can never do, and adds an element of elegance to your special day. For this, I will sing up to three songs at your wedding ceremony and rehearse with the organist or other musicians for up to 30 minutes beforehand. We'll meet for an hour and I'll help you choose and schedule particular vocal and instrumental pieces to both personalize and enhance your ceremony.
