Are you aware of, or do you utilize chord shapes or partial shapes other than in first position?. How would you describe your thumb independence (ie, reliable alternate bassline played against melody line?).
Writing from the Inside Out Great songs, like all art, hold a mirror up and reflect who we are. Songwriting, at its heart, is storytelling, and telling your story in. This will be an extremely hands on session. In the course of the weekend, participants will find themselves writing a number of songs.
Happy will teach material from his vast repertoire of traditional folk, blues and country songs, with one or two contemporary ones (including a couple of great arrangements of Dylan songs). Join me for my Tuesdays with Jorma series of virtual workshops. When you sign up for one of these Tuesday events, you will be gaining experience which will allow you.
Find yourself relaxing on white sandy shell-strewn beaches while being caressed by the warm Gulf breeze; immerse yourself in non-peril instruction from Jorma Kaukonen to warm your fingers and soul. Did we just say "Gulf breeze"? Yes, that is right! This year, we are excited to announce that Fur Peace Ranch On The Road goes East Coast!
The Ranch is now requiring all guests 12 years of age and older to show proof of being fully vaccinated for entry with a valid ticket. If you are not able to provide proof, you will not be allowed to attend the concert. Jorma Kaukonen and John Hurlbut in concert with a Q & A session like the old Quarantine Concert Days.

A truly amazing place, for musical study and performances. Jorma Kaukonen, still going strong, is one of the most amazing musical geniuses of the last 60 years, and he has created a brilliant community that exudes with history, creativity, and social responsibility. Well worth a long drive or difficult travel to be there.

The Fur Peace Ranch is a true musicians retreat. Where else can you and your kindred guitar buddies go for an extended weekend to hang with your favorite blues players, get top notch workshops from the same and be treated to delicious, high quality meals in the beautiful Appalachian Hills. Jorma Kaukonen, blues and rock guitarist extraordinaire and his wife Vanessa have realized a dream for themselves and all of us. Established in 1998, the ranch keeps improving year after year.

It now boasts a 250 seat theater as well an art gallery dedicated to art from, and in the spirit of, those heady psychedelic days. Been going since 1999 and don't ever plan on stopping.

This for me being a lifelong admirer of Jorma was a dream come true. The Ranch is beautiful and the people who we're there all were super friendly. Went with my brother for his birthday party & we had the nicest night listening to John Hurlburt & Jorma jam in the restaurant while dining. After the jam Jorma couldn't have been more cordial and down to earth!

Any requests by all were met with a huge smile & willingness. I can go on and on but needlessly to say we're going back & made lifelong memories at F.P.R. I recommend it 1000% to any lover of life.

Such a cool place! I went for the pho dinner. You pay for dinner and stay for live music. Show up a few minutes early and you can walk the grounds and check out the gift shop and museum in the silo where there is tons of music memorabilia and art. I can see how this would be a totally nostalgic experience for some. If nothing else, it's something different to do. Definitely worth checking out!

I've been involved with the FPR casually and professionally since its' conception. The owners, Rock and Roll hall of Fame member Jorma and his wife Vanessa Kaukonen have been my friends since their relocation from Woodstock NY to the Meigs County / Athens / Ohio University area. The music venue at FPR, The Fur Peace Station, is a new facility with state-of-the-art audio/visual systems and has hosted many fine musical acts of various musical genre.

It is a 200 seat facility which sells out regularly as many enjoy the comfort and the intimacy as well as a very mature and involved audience. The FPR is also home to The Psylodelic Art Gallery, so named for the psychedelic era of the '60s and the new, two story silo in which displays are housed.

The iconic Fur Peace Ranch is foremost a camp for all levels of guitar training taught by a variety of accomplished rock, blues, classical and folk guitarists, mostly from back in the day. The charming 42 acre ranch is owned by legendary guitarist, Jorma Kaukonen, from Jefferson Airplane and founder of Hot Tuna. Big bands from the 60's. But the ranch also includes a terrific concert venue, cool "psychedelic" museum and homey cafe.

If you are lucky enough to attend a concert here you are in for an awesome, special and incredible experience. I say lucky because the concert venue has approx. 220 seats and 3/4 of them are held by season subscription holders (30 shows). The remaining go on sale to the public and are typically sold out within an hour of becoming available. At times, it can help to know someone.;-) Their approach to seating is unique and refreshing from most every other venue you have ever been.

The place itself is pretty in a rustic way and intimate like your family room. The high quality sound system compliments the superb artists playing. The crowd can be described as old hippies with a sprinkling of younger music aficionados. People are not trying to take pictures, but instead just grooving on the sounds. Along with the music you can enjoy popcorn, cookies, coffee, cider, etc. that are for sale. But, there are NO ALCOHOL SALES.

Probably a good thing since it is out in the MIDDLE OF NO WHERE and you have to drive on a one lane, winding road, up a hill to enter & exit. At night, it is black out there! Being at FPR is a memorable experience that you will want to recreate many times over.

Regardless if you're a seasoned veteran of the road, weekend warrior or just like to play guitar for your own enjoyment, stop what you're doing and go to the website and make a reservation to the Fur Peace Ranch. Classes range from guitar finger picking, electric, bass, songwriting and more. The classes are taught by world renowned artists that share you with every inside lick, riff and strum to help you elevate your playing to the next level.

That said, this is my experience at Jorma's Guitar Ranch. Upon arrival I was greeted by Vanessa, clip board in hand she welcomed us with a smile and instructed us where to park our RV and get acclimated with fresh cup of coffee and cookies. Once settled in we, (all the campers) gathered in the concert hall for orientation and to introduce ourselves to one another.

You can say as little or as much as you want, sharing is what this place is all about. The lessons are scheduled in such a way that is not overbearing, Jorma was my instructor, and aside from being a living legend, he was gracious, patience, and totally in tune with the varied skill set of the class. Aside from getting the real skinny on how he plays songs, he keeps you engaged the entire time, and as an ancillary treat, he'll regale you with amusing anecdotes from his illustrious career.

Sometimes we listened to songs, another day he read us a poem from an obscure poet. What impressed me most is the entire staff all have a passion and heart to serve their guests to the best of their ability, and not just the staff, the owners too. Each meal Vanessa served food, made sure her guests were taken care of, handed out deserts, and then bused tables.

During the student performance Jorma worked as a stage grip, adjusting microphones and plugging cables the entire time as well as sitting in on occasion with his performing students. The real glue to this enchanting ranch is their manager, John. I have stayed at five star accommodations all over the country and none of them could surpass the congeniality, thoughtfulness, attentiveness and spirit of this humble man.

He greets everyone with a smile from ear to ear, so warm and genuine you can't help but feel at home. By the end of the first day he knew everyone's first name, and was always there to freshen up your coffee, or attended to whatever your needs may be. The kitchen staff, Justin in particular, was accommodating to my dietary needs and went out of their way at each meal to insure I was taken care of.

The food was delicious, plentiful and varied at each meal. The only thing I was sad about was seeing the sign for the Fur Peace Ranch in the rearview mirror. Thank you for one of the most memorable experiences I have ever had.

A special place to learn traditional music from the Master's. A place to meet new friends, relax, and hear some great performances. Jorma is our Captain!
