My name is Ryan Neaveill (last name rhymes with level), and I have been teaching kids and adults of all ages for over twenty years.
After receiving my bachelors degree in music composition and theory in 1989 from Illinois Wesleyan University where I majored in piano and minored in voice, I taught for five years at the Morton Academy of Music in Morton, Illinois.
I moved to Champaign in 1994 and began composing and teaching in this wonderful community. I have adjudicated state music contests for Illinois Music Educators Association (IMEA), conducted and directed numerous church music programs and, in recent years, have done masters level work at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois, in the area of music ministry.
I am a published and award-winning composer, having been a recipient of the ASCAPlus Award for the past five straight years from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
By teaching lessons out of my own private studio, I can offer rates considerably more affordable than you will find at some of our local music stores and academies.
- I would recommend this business
I think Ryan knows just about everything there is to know about music all the way from classical to jazz to rock. And he can play anything. ANYTHING! At least I've never been able to stump him.

We are taking piano (me) and singing (my daughter). It has been great taking lessons from the same teacher. Unlike other voice teachers Ryan can accompany on the piano. He is very flexible with songs and my daughter is very happy to be able to learn some current songs. I have made some progress with piano despite having no previous experience, sense of rhythm or any musical talents
From Our Website
For beginning piano and guitar students, I use a graded lesson series such as those published by Alfred or Hal Leonard. For voice students, I will typically select songs from various genres (music theater, popular music, classical arias, etc.), depending on the student's skill level and interests, and work on technical aspects such as support and breath control as well as more interpretive aspects such as dynamics and phrasing. For ukulele students, we'll work on learning chords and how to finger them along with learning various strumming patterns.
While I prefer to teach lessons in person, I do offer to teach them via video conferencing if you are unable to come to my studio. All you need is Skype on your computer, smartphone or tablet or (if you are a user of Apple products such as an iPhone or iPad) we can connect using FaceTime. This allows us to see and hear each other and yet be miles apart! So, if you are interested in taking lessons without having to leave the comfort of your own home, contact me and we'll set it up!
Do you teach flute or trumpet or.? I teach piano, voice, guitar, ukulele and composition/songwriting/theory. That's it. If your child is in band in school and needs instruction for a brass or woodwind instrument, I'd suggest asking the band director if they can recommend anyone. Can I sit in and observe my child's lesson? Absolutely! In fact, I encourage parents to sit in on their kids' lessons. That way, you know what they should be working on and can encourage and supervise their weekly practice schedule.
