The primary objective is to stimulate and nurture expression, imagination, and individuality through music. Programs are designed to help individuals discover and appreciate their inner potential. The Bloom School adheres to the belief that encouraging new ideas from creative individuals and helping others to recognize and appreciate them, provides the foundation for a better future.

The institution was conceived in 1975 when David Bloom taught theory and ear-training to eager instrumentalists of every type from his classroom on Rush Street, upstairs from the supper club and jazz lounge, Jilly's.

After forty years of listening to sets by jazz masters as well as masters of other genres of music, I've noticed they are not always effective in the overall presentation of their music. Many musicians respect linear improvisation far more than they do solo development and set formatting. Though important, improvisation is not the whole story of a jazz performance.
These Ten Commandments are designed to stimulate an enlightened level of jazz soloing for those seeking to move beyond mere imitation in the language of jazz and achieve a level of individual mastery. I derived them from listening and identifying the best concepts present within the most remarkable solos of the most revered masters.
Whether studying directly with Bloom School of Jazz Founder David Bloom, or with one of our exceptional faculty members, many students report that, in just a few months of study, their skills increase exponentially. Students have travelled not only from across the Chicagoland area for this opportunity; but even internationally.
This course is not a jam session-- it is an introduction to jazz for musicians of any genre who have yet to learn its profound language. We understand that a lot of mistakes are always made when undertaking something new and we support those initial efforts with an overall ambiance of fun and acceptance.

I've heard great things about this place from a great sax player, but they are HORRIBLE at bothering to get back to you. A phone call. Nothing. Email. Nothing. Should hire someone to keep website updated (posts from 2018 looks very lax and unprofessional) and answer the phone. I dislike the idea/feeling i have to chase anyone down to give them money. I'd hate to go there and find out they're closed or something, because again, the info here is incomplete. No listed business hours online here? It's 2019, guys. Come on.
