Mike's approach to teaching is unique. "It's not enough to just master the technique of playing the instrument" he says, "you need to be a well-rounded musician too. This means having a good understanding of the underlying theory behind music, developing a strong sense of meter (rhythm), and being exposed to music from many genres and cultures".
Mike incorporates theory, listening and accompaniment into the lessons to achieve this, often creating custom exercises tailored to each individual student's needs. His advanced students are encouraged to learn to improvise, play with others, challenge themselves and expand their repertoire.

Simultaneously, he began the study of the classical guitar with Tim Phelan and music harmony with Boris Borgstrom. From there he studied music at Mohawk College in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, giving equal time to both the jazz and classical approaches to harmony, history and performance.
